READ: Literally seconds after I hit send on last week’s email which highlighted Mr. Roger’s “fierce gentleness,” I received a link to an excellent article on male nurturance culture from my friend, Krista. Maybe five paragraphs in and I already knew I’d be sharing it with you this week.
Not just another rehashing of the problems, this article offers solid elucidation of the underlying sources and real, practicable solutions for addressing them. Highly, highly recommended reading for all of you, but especially for my fellow men.
“The opposite of masculine rape culture is masculine nurturance culture. This is men’s work to do, and yet it is needed by people of all genders who have men in their lives. The rewards are waiting.”
I had the good fortune of being part of a very beautiful circle of brothers, The Chicago Men’s Group, for almost two years during my time in the city. We invested three hours a week to do this very sort of work, and I cannot tell you what a positive impact it has had on my life. I’m actively seeking a new group here in Nashville, but, if I can’t find one soon, I’ll be starting one with the support of the network at EVRYMAN. Supporting men in growing beyond their shame and wounding into the fullness of their healthy and authentic selves is one of the most impactful missions we can all take together at this moment in history, I firmly believe.
If anyone would like to know more about men’s work and how you (or someone you love) might get involved, please feel free to reach out to me directly for more info and resources!
Make this week magnificent!
