Nothing special, just a nice weekend

Just thought I’d say hi. We’ve had a nice weekend. We were going to get away to Louisville for something new this weekend, but we ended up having a few things going on that we didn’t want to miss, so we stayed in town. It has nonetheless been a refreshing weekend. We went to a party on Friday to celebrate the recent marriage of our friends Daniel and Elizabeth. It was nice, though we gorged ourselves with food.

We left and we were going to rent a German movie that Adam loves (”Wings of Desire”, I think), but Hollywood Video ended up being closed earlier than normal because they were recently held up, so Adam went to Blockbuster and bought “Garden State” instead. It was such a nice gift to me. I love that movie so much, and I’ve realized that it’s because it is about Adam and me. Our situation is different in some of the details, but it’s us, and it’s how we began. We fell in love in four days, all wounded and passionate. It also has the best soundtrack of any movie, ever.

Yesterday, to substitute our outing to Louisville, we had a day without cell-phones. We slept in then ate eggs, sausage, toast with apricot marmalade, oj and Russian black tea. Mmm. Then we watched a Nooma video about noise, a devotional video that is made so artfully by the Mars Hill Church in Michigan. It was very appropriate, considering we had decided to take a day off from our cell phones. Then we got dressed cozy and cute and left for a fun date day. We went to the Nashville Zoo! You may know from blogs I wrote around this time last year what I think of the zoo. Love it. And Adam has never been to a zoo, any zoo, ever. He only recently went to his first aquarium. We had a perfect day to go and had a lovely time. Our favorites were the clouded leopards and the meerkats. We ate rock candy and listened to the amazing and hilarious call of the gibbon monkeys. It was great.

When the zoo closed, we left and went to caffeine and, each on our laptop, took a personality/spiritual gifts test that we were going to take a seminar on this afternoon. After a while, we left and got some ice cream from Circle K and went to see one of our youth, Tyler in a play at his high school. It was fun to see, uncomfortable to watch at points, but a great message about living life. It went along with Adam’s and my mantra from when I quit the lawfirm job, “Do what you like, like what you do. If you don’t like what you do, quit your job, if you don’t like what you do, quit your job…”

After the play, we got a pretty good meal at Casa Bona downtown and talked about what it would be like if Adam joined the Navy (mind you, my worst fear is being a military wife). We went home, and I will stop the record there.

Today was nice too. We slept through church, somewhat inadvertantly, and get up to go to the spiritual gifts seminar. It was good-ish. We are both a little unclear about the distinctions of spiritual gifts and how they are determined, but the seminar was worthwhile. We each have 50 page printouts about ourselves, and I’m interested in seeing what it has to say.

Now we’ve been sitting at The Frothy Monkey for several hours on the porch. It’s a little rainy, so it’s a perfect porch night. We’ve been catching up on some recreational reading. I finished reading the great interview with Bono in the October Rolling Stone. He’s such a hero for me. He’s passionate, a believer with a faith that lives in the world, an excellent musician, an advocate for people in need. He’s great.

Anyway, those are my thoughts for the day. Have a great week.

-Jessica.
