A dream come true

Posted by Lofbomms on May 11th, 2004

I got one of my childhood wishes yesterday. I broke my toe.

I’ll explain.

I remember being in elementary school, and friends would occasionally break an arm or leg. Then, they’d get a bright colored cast that everyone would get to sign. It was like a yearbook in the middle of the year. I always wanted to break a bone, so I could have all of my friends write cool things on me! Growing up, my brother broke several bones, but I never did. I also thought crutches, braces, and glasses would be cool. My brother had all of them at one point, but I got jipped on every count! Actually, I did get reading glasses in junior high, but it was because I faked on my sight test. I could see just fine.

I digress.

So, now I have a broken bone, and it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Get it? Cracked? At least I get to sit in bed for a day and get paid for it. That’s right. Workman’s comp.

I was at work yesterday morning, and I was helping a new attorney by hanging her framed pictures on her wall. As I hung one of the big pictures (stinkin’ heavy) on the nail, the wire on the back snapped, and the picture plummeted, smashing across the toes on my left foot. I was wearing sandals, so there was no protection. Momentarily, I was rolling on the floor in lots of pain. My big toe was purple instantaneously. Yum.

Several of my coworkers were immediately helpful, getting me water and ibuprofin, an ice pack, etc. My boss brought me to the emergency room, and while we waited, Adam came with ice cream. When they finally saw me, they numbed my toe, took some x-rays, and drilled my toe nail to release some pressure. The x-rays showed that indeed, the tip of my big toe had been fractured. Pleasant. Like I’d always dreamed of… Suffice it to say, I would have been okay if I had stayed my whole life deprived of broken bones.

A Story of Epic Proportions, Part 2

Posted by Lofbomms on May 6th, 2004

So… I never finished the epic adventure story. I’m tired, but I want to finish it, so here goes.

Adria, the big-wig vetoed the bag idea because it was the old logo. It seemed that Steve was going to have to fire the designer after all, but then I remembered a copy machine that I’d seen when Adam and I had been wandering around looking for food (copy girls notice these things). I asked Steve if he had anything with the new logo on it, but he didn’t. Some women were passing by, and I asked them if they had anything, and one of them had a parking pass and a packet of information of some sort on letterhead with the new logo.

So, I ran up to the copy machine and schooled that thing. I was using the enlarge like it was going out of style. Finally I had a full page logo from the letterhead. I ran back down to the photo-op and showed Steve the logo. He said in a surprised voice that it actually looked pretty good. Adam found a microphone stand somewhere, and we mounted the logo on cardboard then on the stand like a little street sign or something. We placed the sign off to the side so that it would show up on the bottom corner of the pictures. Steve took a couple test pictures of Adam and me (with Dolly of course), and the logo was clear as if it had been added digitally like it was supposed to.

Adam and I were pumped. We asked Steve if we had saved his designer’s job. He said that if for no reason other than our enthusiasm, he wouldn’t fire the forgetful designer as long as Adria the big-wig approved of the logo sign.

We watched as he walked over to her with some of the test pictures, and we saw he lips go, “that’s perfect.” We literally jumped up and down. We had saved the designer’s job. Steve came back to us, obviously relieved, and he said that either of us could have a job with him, no question, if we ever came to LA. I took his business card. I hear jobs are hard to come by in LA…

And that’s the true story of how Adam and I saved the job of some guy in California who we’d never met while working for MTV.

Now I’m exhausted, and I’m going to bed. 7 weeks and a few days until the wedding! AHH!
